Kantvik PEKILO® factory

Enifer’s first factory will produce up to 3 million kilograms of sustainable protein annually, paving the way for a more planet-friendly food system

Reviving the Past, Reinventing the Future

The original PEKILO® factories operated in 1975-1991 and laid the foundation for this innovative process.

Today, we’re building on that legacy, elevating it to new heights with the construction of the world’s first factory dedicated to the next generation of PEKILO®

This is the world’s only commercial factory to produce powdery mycoprotein ingredients from side stream raw materials.

Impact

Our local and global food systems are facing unprecedented challenges. To meet the nutritional needs of a growing population while staying within planetary boundaries, we must embrace innovative ways of producing protein. The first PEKILO® factory is set to transform the food and pet nutrition industry by delivering a complete, highly digestible, and sustainable protein with minimal processing. Produced from side streams and powered by renewable energy, the production requires no new agricultural land and minimal water—this is our recipe for a truly planet-friendly food system.

At full capacity, the factory will produce the equivalent protein of 30,000 cows, with at least 20 times fewer greenhouse gas emissions.

Locally produced

Mycoprotein is cultivated in fermentation tanks, enabling consistent, year-round local production, regardless of weather conditions.

Located along the Baltic Sea and just a 30-minute drive from Helsinki’s city center, Kantvik has been a hub for Finnish bioindustries for over half a century. With much of the necessary infrastructure already in place, it’s an ideal location for establishing a mycoprotein factory.

Proven to be scalable

Thanks to the long history of PEKILO®, we know that scaling successfully is possible – and have the blueprints! Our mission is to make sustainable diets accessible to all by achieving a price point that drives real, lasting impact.

At full capacity, the factory will produce enough protein to cover the annual needs for 40.000 people.

Solid team

In addition to the founders, who have extensive expertise in biorefining and fungal bioscience, we have built an engineering team with decades of combined experience in leading and coordinating complex projects.

We are very happy to start cooperation with Enifer. We believe that there is an increased need for alternative proteins as the global population grows. Demand is also supported globally by environmental and ethical considerations. We are confident in Enifer’s opportunities to expand

Kantvik timeline

2026

Production ramps up

Thanks to the continuous process, the turnover rate of PEKILO® is high, yielding roughly 500kg of mycoprotein in an hour at full capacity. Production is highly automated, with some 15 people being directly employed by the factory.

This means we can offer sustainable and high-quality protein without a premium price tag – sustainable diets are for all!

Next steps of sustainable protein production

The first factory is a significant milestone, but for making mycoprotein a staple ingredient for people and animals alike, it’s only the first step. Plans for future factories are already underway and will be realised once our first PEKILO® factory is operational.

2025

Construction is in full swing

An old industrial hall is given a new lease of life as a modern mycoprotein factory. Major structural renovations, equipment deliveries and installations, piping and electrical works need to be coordinated like a symphony orchestra. Hundreds or people are involved from architects, engineers, building contractors and equipment suppliers.

2024

Factory construction starts

The factory is built together with Sweco. Works commence with detailed engineering, key equipment orders and civil works on-site.

Our first factory is fully funded

Enifer’s Series B funding round was closed in May 2024.

The past, present and future of PEKILO®.

Our technology

At the heart of our process is the PEKILO® fungus, which we grow in tanks in a process that resembles brewing. We use fungi’s remarkable ability to grow on just about anything to upcycle agri-food industry by-products into sustainable, nutritious mycoprotein ingredients.
